Students and Job Seekers Protest Quota System, Disrupt Traffic Across Bangladesh

Students across Bangladesh hit the streets for three straight days to fight government job quotas. They wanted to pressure judges and politicians before a big court hearing about hiring rules. The protesters blocked major roads and caused massive traffic jams at universities nationwide.

Student leader Asif Mahmud planned the chaos carefully. He wanted maximum participation on July 3rd to influence the Supreme Court case scheduled for July 4th. The group kept their road-blocking strategy secret until the last minute to avoid getting stopped early.

Female students joined the protests in huge numbers. The demonstrators gathered at Dhaka University and marched through the capital city. They blocked the busy Shahbagh intersection around 3:30 PM and stayed there for two hours despite police warnings.

Students at Jahangirnagar University shut down the Dhaka-Aricha Highway for two hours. Protesters at other schools blocked trains and major roads across the country. The Students Against Discrimination group organized all the demonstrations.

The protesters demanded merit-based hiring instead of quota systems. They wanted a 2018 rule brought back that canceled most job quotas. Student coordinator Nahid Islam warned of stronger action if the court ruled against them. The group planned sit-ins at all public universities the next day to keep the pressure on.
