Student protests against reinstated government job quota system intensify

Students in Dhaka took their fight against job quotas online on Friday, July 5, 2024. The day before, the Supreme Court had brought back the quota system for government jobs. Street protests stopped for the day as student leaders planned their next moves. The group Students Against Discrimination wanted to reach more people through social media. They decided to take a break from marching to build up their online support.

The student leaders called for a complete boycott of classes and exams starting July 7. They contacted students from each department to join their cause. Once one group of students joined, others felt pressure to follow. Leaders published lists showing which departments supported them. This peer pressure worked really well to get more students involved.

Hasnat Abdullah from the student group talked about their social media strategy. Students from different dorms and departments learned about the movement through online campaigns. The group planned protest rallies at all schools for 3 PM the next day. About 47 different student groups at Dhaka University agreed to skip classes. Teachers also showed their support for the student movement.

Things got tense when student leaders tried to kick Sarjis Alam out of his dorm room. Other students blocked the dorm gates to support him. The situation calmed down when officials stepped in and let Sarjis stay. Students at other universities like Jahangirnagar, Khulna, and Chittagong also held their own protests. They blocked roads and held rallies demanding an end to the quota system.
