APC Says Tinubu's Running Mate to Be Decided After Convention

The ruling party says President Tinubu will pick his 2027 running mate after their big meeting next year. National Secretary Ajibwhile Basiru explained that party leaders strongly support the president for another term. He spoke on television Friday morning about the upcoming election plans.

Party members from across Nigeria met recently and backed Tinubu based on his work record. Many important people in the group have given him their full support for the next race. Basiru stressed that talks about choosing a vice president have not started at all.

Nobody has suggested that Tinubu plans to replace current Vice President Kashim Shettima. The secretary made clear that no decisions about running mates are happening right away. The party follows rules that require picking the main candidate first before selecting their partner.

A meeting in Gombe State caused problems last Sunday when leaders endorsed Tinuby without mentioning Shettima. Governor Babagana Zulum from Borno State got upset and demanded that the vice president be included. The gathering ended badly because of arguments over the missing endorsement.

Basiru said the party convention happens about one year before general elections. This timing gives leaders enough space to make careful choices about who runs together. The process follows traditional steps that have worked well in past campaigns.
