Apple adds Digital ID for TSA use with US passports

Apple has introduced a Digital ID feature allowing Americans to store their passport credentials within Apple Wallet for verification at more than 250 TSA security checkpoints nationwide. The technology enables travelers without REAL ID-compliant licenses to use their iPhone or Apple Watch for domestic airport screening, though physical passports remain mandatory for international travel.

Jennifer Bailey, who oversees Apple Pay and Apple Wallet operations, indicated the expansion aims to provide additional secure identity storage options while maintaining privacy protections. Users create their Digital ID by scanning their passport photo page and embedded chip, capturing facial imagery, and completing verification steps. Authentication occurs through Face ID or Touch ID without requiring device handoff to security personnel.

Passport information remains encrypted on individual devices rather than accessible to Apple, with users controlling which details are shared during each transaction. The feature complements existing digital identification capabilities available across twelve states and Puerto Rico.
