Apple lands WeChat mini app cut

After a year of discussions, Apple has reached an agreement with WeChat that will grant it a share of revenue from the platform's extensive mini-app ecosystem in China. Under the new terms, Apple will receive a 15 percent commission on transactions within participating WeChat mini-apps. This rate is half of its standard App Store fee but provides access to a massive market where users typically bypass traditional app downloads.

Developers who opt into this program must integrate specific Apple software features, including parental control for sharing a child's age range. This arrangement is projected to generate billions of dollars for Apple, capitalizing on a previously untapped revenue stream from within the dominant Chinese social platform.

This development coincides with upcoming changes to Apple's fee structure in the European Union. Starting next year, a new Core Technology Fee will be introduced, which, when combined with other service charges, could result in some developers paying a total commission of up to 20 percent if they use alternative payment systems.
