Apple plans to use tandem OLED for iPhone, but tech likely delayed until after 2028

Apple explores tandem OLED display integration for future iPhone models following the successful implementation in M4 iPad Pro devices. The technology layers multiple OLED panels to enhance brightness, power efficiency, and screen longevity while reducing burn-in risks. Development timelines indicate mass production cannot begin until two years after initial engineering completion. Current iPhone display suppliers Samsung and LG maintain primary manufacturing roles, with BOE serving secondary functions. No manufacturing partner has committed to beginning tandem OLED development for smartphone applications.

The Elec reports Apple has not initiated tandem OLED engineering for iPhone products, delaying potential implementation beyond 2028. Samsung previously required substantial order volumes before agreeing to produce tandem displays for iPad Pro models due to profitability concerns. iPhone sales volumes significantly exceed iPad Pro shipments, creating more attractive business opportunities for display manufacturers. The technology stacks multiple OLED layers to achieve superior performance compared to traditional single-layer screens. Apple must finalize development partnerships before advancing toward commercial production phases.
