Apple plays tortoise while OpenAI drowns in AI chaos

Apple positioned itself strategically in artificial intelligence development after observers suggested the company lagged behind competitors. The tech giant followed its established approach of refining technology before launch rather than rushing incomplete products to market. Apple partnered with OpenAI to integrate large language models and acquired three startups to strengthen internal capabilities. The company built a 3-billion-parameter model for iPhones and iPads while developing server-based systems for complex tasks.

Apple Intelligence features launched in phases starting in October 2024 with emoji tools and notification summaries. Advanced capabilities, such as in-app Siri actions and personal context awareness, face delays until 2026. CEO Tim Cook noted progress on personalized Siri features at the end of July 2025. The company emphasized privacy through Private Apple Intelligence, processing simple tasks on devices and complex operations on encrypted cloud servers.

The strategy contrasts with competitors who rushed artificial intelligence products to market despite technical limitations such as hallucinations in early language models. Apple's ecosystem of 1.5 billion devices provides leverage for partnerships while controlled spending targets margin expansion. OpenAI's screenless device project stalled due to computing resource constraints that favor Apple's smartphone-focused approach.
