Apple Watch Ultra saves Mumbai techie from drowning death

An Apple Watch Ultra rescued a 26-year-old Mumbai technology professional after diving equipment failed near Puducherry. Kshitij Zodape descended 36 meters into the Bay of Bengal when his weight belt detached, and this caused an uncontrolled ascent toward the surface. The watch detected the rapid vertical movement, and the device activated warning displays before triggering an emergency siren audible up to 180 meters away.

The alarm alerted Zodape's instructor, who intervened after the diver had risen 10 meters. Zodape later contacted Apple CEO Tim Cook, who responded personally to acknowledge the incident. The Apple Watch Ultra launched in 2022 with specialized safety features designed for extreme conditions, and the emergency siren emits alternating high-pitched sounds to penetrate environmental noise.
