APRM's Aly-El Hefny denies judging Zimbabwe

The African Peer Review Mechanism has conducted assessments of economic governance systems in Zimbabwe, with lead panel member Aly-El Hefny emphasizing that the evaluation focuses on learning and documenting successful practices rather than making judgments. The delegation visited Dinson Iron and Steel Company in Manhize, where operations director Wilfred Motsi reported that the facility has nearly completed its initial development phase at 98 percent and currently manufactures 600,000 tons of steel against domestic consumption of 400,000 tons.

Management indicated plans to double output to 1.2 million tons during the second stage before eventually reaching a target of five million tons. The review examines how major industrial projects contribute to economic transformation, employment generation, and rural development objectives.

APRM focal point Ambassador Chimbindi described the process as a self-assessment mechanism designed to evaluate progress on economic development while promoting transparency and accountability across African nations.
