Asim Iftikhar urges UN action on Kashmir, highlights Pakistan's peacekeeping role

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad delivered remarks during a United Nations Security Council session focused on adapting peace operations for political solutions. The Pakistani diplomat highlighted his nation's extensive peacekeeping record spanning 48 missions across four continents. More than 235,000 Pakistani personnel have served under UN mandates, with 182 making the ultimate sacrifice for global peace efforts. Pakistan maintains its status among leading troop contributors and helped establish the UN Peacebuilding Commission. Ahmad stressed that political approaches must guide all peacekeeping initiatives.

The ambassador characterized the Jammu and Kashmir situation as a critical measure of UN effectiveness in maintaining international stability. He urged Security Council members to honor their responsibilities through concrete action. Ahmad demanded implementation of existing UN resolutions addressing the regional conflict. The diplomat emphasized that any resolution must reflect the aspirations of Kashmiri populations. He called for sustained international commitment to achieving lasting peace through established diplomatic channels.
