Yahya Sanyang from Latrikunda Sabiji has brought back his bill to change part of the Local Government Act. The change would let councilors picked by mayors and chairpersons vote during council meetings. More than twelve lawmakers turned down this same bill at its second reading last year. Many claimed these councilors were chosen mainly for political gain.
Sanyang remains firm despite earlier rejection. He presented the bill again to his fellow Assembly Members yesterday. He believes these appointed councilors speak for important groups like women, youth, and people with disabilities, which might not find enough representation through regular elections.
Sanyang points out that many appointed councilors have special knowledge about education, health, and social services. Their votes could help push for better policies in these areas. The bill faces its important second reading this Thursday. At that time, lawmakers will decide if it moves forward or fails again.
