ASUS may have a way to kill GPU power connectors

ASUS demonstrated prototype hardware that eliminates traditional power cables from graphics processing units. The company developed enhanced PCIe slot technology capable of transmitting 250 watts through modified connector pins. Current industry standards limit PCIe slots to 75 watts, requiring separate power connections for most graphics cards.

Engineers added five additional contact points to the slot interface, creating denser pin configurations similar to high-power connector designs. Motherboards require corresponding updates with reinforced conductive elements to support the increased electrical load. The prototype system successfully powered a TUF GeForce RTX 5060 Ti graphics card at 248 watts during testing demonstrations.

This advancement could eliminate power connectors from graphics cards that consume under 300 watts. Computer builders would benefit from cleaner cable management and reduced installation complexity. The technology remains experimental, requiring compatible motherboards with specialized PCIe slots for implementation.
