MSI PSU adds real-time shield against melting GPU power connectors

MSI is launching a power supply designed to stop GPU power connectors from melting. Their new MPG Ai TS series, featuring what they call the world's first proactive and instant protection system, aims to solve the persistent issue of damaged 16-pin connectors on high-end graphics cards.

The power supply units will come in 1300W and 1600W capacities, both compliant with the PCIe 5.1 standard. A key component is a continuous hardware monitoring system that watches the power delivery in real time, intended to identify and mitigate problems before they cause physical damage from a loose or faulty connection. The units include a USB Type-C port for communication with the motherboard, allowing for advanced system monitoring.

This development follows an engineering sample being sent to a prominent MSI Afterburner developer last fall, hinting at future software support. The PSUs will use the updated 12V-2x6 power connectors alongside this new protection circuitry. MSI plans to showcase the technology at CES, suggesting this could become a standard approach for addressing the widespread connector failures if other manufacturers follow suit.
