Atlanta mayor halts evictions, water shutoffs over food aid cuts

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens issued a directive on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2025, that temporarily blocks evictions and water service disconnections for vulnerable residents through Jan. 31, 2026. The measure responds to disruptions in federal SNAP benefits that have left thousands of households without nutrition assistance.

The executive action prevents the Department of Watershed Management from cutting off water to customers behind on payments. It also stops eviction proceedings against tenants in housing properties owned or subsidized by the city. Dickens stated that residents should not face losing shelter or water access while struggling to feed their families during the federal aid interruption.

Rising housing costs and inflation have already strained low-income communities across Atlanta. City officials plan to maintain these protections until the end of January 2026 or until federal nutrition program funding resumes. The mayor has called on state and federal authorities to develop permanent solutions that prevent future gaps in programs supporting working families. The directive continues Dickens' efforts to expand affordable housing options and utility assistance for residents facing financial hardship.
