ATMA and PROGGA press NBR in Dhaka for swift tobacco law fix

The National Board of Revenue received requests from tobacco control advocates during a Sunday meeting at their headquarters. Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance and PROGGA representatives asked Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan to expedite amendments to existing tobacco legislation. Health economic data shows tobacco-related deaths and diseases cost more than government tobacco revenues generate.

This financial burden prompted the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to strengthen current tobacco regulations through proposed legal changes. Advocacy groups emphasized the need for rapid legislative approval during their September 14 discussions with revenue officials. Chairman Khan committed to supporting the amendment process through necessary administrative channels.

ATMA Convenor Mortuza Haider Liton attended alongside co-convenors Nadira Kiron and Mizan Chowdhury. PROGGA sent representative Mehedi Hasan to participate in the policy discussions. The organizations continue pressing for stronger tobacco control measures across Bangladesh.
