AU slams US strikes on Venezuela, backs sovereignty and dialogue

The African Union just threw some serious shade over the Venezuela situation. Following U.S. military strikes and unconfirmed reports about President Nicolás Maduro, the AU issued a firm communiqué from Addis Ababa expressing deep alarm and calling for immediate de-escalation. The statement emphasized foundational principles of international law, specifically state sovereignty and territorial integrity, while urging peaceful dialogue and respect for Venezuela's constitutional order. This position aligns the continental body with other Global South nations, condemning the actions, framing the crisis as a threat to regional stability with potential worldwide repercussions.

Chaos erupted in Venezuela with explosions hitting military sites in Caracas and surrounding states, triggering blackouts and street clashes. U.S. leadership claimed responsibility and announced Maduro's capture, a claim the Venezuelan president denied in a broadcast, declaring a national emergency. The hybrid nature of the attack, combining airstrikes with possible ground operations, has drawn widespread international criticism from governments across Latin America, as well as from Russia and China, while sending oil prices upward.

From an African perspective, the AU's response resonates with historical struggles against external intervention and colonialism. The communiqué’s focus on self-determination and internal political solutions reflects a broader diplomatic philosophy championed by members like South Africa. The escalating conflict carries tangible risks for African economies, primarily through volatile energy markets and potential disruptions to global trade frameworks. With humanitarian conditions deteriorating rapidly inside Venezuela, the AU’s appeal for restraint underscores a priority for peaceful conflict resolution to prevent further regional instability and human suffering.
