Authorities Find Deceased Man with Firearm on Idaho Mountain After Firefighter Ambush

SWAT officers found a dead man with a firearm on Canfield Mountain in Idaho Sunday night. The location was the same spot where firefighters faced an ambush earlier that day. At least two firefighters died during the attack. Authorities lifted the shelter order after discovering the body. A wildfire continues burning on the mountain.

Firefighters responding to a blaze came under gunfire from high-powered rifles Sunday. Police engaged the shooter for several hours after the attack began. All victims worked for the fire department. Kootenai County ordered residents to stay inside their homes. The attack happened at a popular hiking area.

Fire chief Pat Riley said he felt heartbroken about the incident. Officials did not order evacuations despite the ongoing flames. Crews cannot reach the fire due to safety concerns. Dense smoke covered the forested mountain area. The fire chief worried about flames spreading further.

Gun violence occurs frequently across the United States. Many states have few barriers when people purchase firearms. The Gun Violence Archive counts 189 mass shootings this year. These events involve four or more people being shot. Idaho Governor Brad Little called the attack a direct assault on brave firefighters.
