Awami League rages at the Yunus regime in Dhaka over arrests of rivals and critics

Bangladesh's Awami League criticized the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus on Saturday for conducting mass detentions against political opponents. The party claims authorities arrest people without proper evidence and target those who support different political views. Former minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui and university professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Karzon faced detention after participating in a public discussion. Officials initially charged them with public disorder, but later applied terrorism laws against both men.

The Awami League highlighted the arrest of Abu Alam Shahid Khan, a retired government official who attended a constitutional reform meeting. Khan previously served as press secretary to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina before becoming a policy analyst. The party argues these actions prevent citizens from expressing opinions freely and damage democratic processes. Political leaders warn that fear replaces normal government accountability when authorities silence opposition voices through intimidation tactics.
