Azalina drags students into Anti-Bullying Tribunal debate

Malaysia plans direct consultations with students from elementary through university levels regarding the Anti-Bullying Tribunal Bill. Minister Azalina Othman Said announced these engagement sessions will commence in October. The decision emerged after a previous participant questioned whether students would participate in the legislative process. The sessions will complement existing stakeholder meetings with teachers and parents.

Previous town halls emphasized the need for an authoritative tribunal that resolves cases quickly without court involvement. Participants recommended establishing child-friendly reporting mechanisms like dedicated hotlines. Feedback stressed that reporting systems must remain simple to encourage student participation. The consensus favors restorative justice approaches over punitive measures.

The government aims to complete all stakeholder consultations by October before presenting the final proposal to Cabinet. Parliament could receive the Anti-Bullying Tribunal Bill for consideration in December. The tribunal will address incidents not prosecuted under existing criminal statutes. Officials seek comprehensive input before finalizing this anti-bullying legislation.
