Lutfozzaman Babar returned to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday afternoon after an 18-year absence from government service. The former state minister arrived at 4:22 pm for a meeting with Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. Babar previously represented the Netrokona-4 constituency and held ministerial positions under Prime Minister Khaleda Zia between 2001 and 2006. Authorities later charged him alongside BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman for the August 21, 2004, grenade attack. A Dhaka court issued a death sentence against Babar on October 1, 2018.
The High Court reversed his conviction on December 1, 2024, before clearing all remaining charges on January 16, 2025. Officials released Babar from Keraniganj Central Jail on the same day he received final legal clearance. His imprisonment lasted more than seventeen and one-half years before the judicial system overturned his convictions. The former minister completed his first official government visit since regaining freedom from the lengthy detention period.
