Bangladesh fumes as Malaysia detains countrymen in terror swoop, vows joint probe

Bangladesh slammed Malaysia over the detention of several citizens accused of terrorist activities during high-stakes diplomatic talks. Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain confronted his Malaysian counterpart about the controversial arrests that have sparked tensions between the two nations. The heated discussion took place when both officials met on the sidelines of major regional security meetings in Kuala Lumpur. Hossain demanded answers about why Malaysian authorities targeted Bangladeshi workers living in the Southeast Asian country. The diplomatic clash occurred during the 32nd Asean Regional Forum gathering where ministers from across Asia gathered to discuss pressing security issues.

Dhaka officials want full access to investigate whether their citizens actually posed any real threats to Malaysian security. Hossain stressed that his government maintains zero tolerance for extremist activities while pushing for joint fact-finding missions. Bangladesh authorities plan to conduct their separate probe into the militancy allegations that led to the arrests. The foreign adviser called for complete transparency and information sharing between both countries. Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan promised to provide whatever assistance Bangladesh needs during the investigation process.

Both governments agreed to work together despite the diplomatic friction caused by the terrorism accusations. Malaysian officials pledged to give Bangladeshi investigators direct access to detained nationals and case files. The cooperation deal aims to determine whether the arrested individuals actually participated in any extremist plots. Regional security experts closely watch how both countries handle the sensitive case involving foreign workers. The outcome could affect future labor migration policies between Malaysia and Bangladesh.
