Bangladesh launched a new program to fight air pollution from dust particles. Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced the Zero Soil plan during a tree planting event Wednesday. The initiative aims to cover all bare ground with plants and grass across Dhaka. City officials and residents must work together to make the program successful. Hasan said people should plant trees on building rooftops and cover empty lots with vegetation.
The Forest Department and Dhaka North City Corporation started planting saplings around the capital. Workers placed young trees along road dividers and walking paths near water channels. Officials want to finish the first phase of work in north Dhaka areas before September ends. The program will show other parts of the city how to reduce dust pollution. Hasan stressed that natural forests cannot be built artificially and must grow over time.
Dhaka North City Corporation plans to add plants along 120 kilometers of road medians. The agency also wants to green 108 kilometers of waterway banks throughout its territory. Housing authority RAJUK joined the effort with tree planting in Uttara residential areas and Purbachal development zones. Local community groups and volunteer organizations help with the environmental work. Several government officials attended the ceremony at Harar Bari in Purbachal New Town.
Hasan demonstrated the Zero Soil concept after her speech ended. She planted grass next to the Banani cemetery to show residents how the program works. The adviser believes covering bare earth will cut down harmful dust that pollutes city air.
