Bangladesh police call 49 puja attacks mostly minor

Bangladesh police documented 49 security incidents at Hindu worship sites during October, resulting in 15 criminal cases and 19 arrests. Inspector General Baharul Alam told reporters on Tuesday that officers monitored more than 31,000 puja mandaps and intervened to prevent violence from spreading. Several suspects provided confessions to magistrates, and a cyber unit tracked social media posts attempting to spread false information.

Hindu leaders demanded permanent security measures after vandalism occurred across 13 districts before Durga Puja celebrations began. Jayanta Kumar Deb of the Mohanagar Sarbojanin Puja Committee stated that authorities must protect religious minorities throughout the year, rather than just during festivals. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina accused the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of allowing attacks on Hindu communities since August 2024.
