Bangladesh population at 175.7 million with two-thirds in working age

Bangladesh houses nearly 176 million people according to fresh United Nations numbers. Women make up exactly half the population across the South Asian nation. About 115 million citizens fall between ages 15 and 64, creating a massive workforce opportunity. The UN Population Fund released these figures during a Monday press conference. Catherine Breen Kamkong from the agency shared the data at their Gulshan office.

Young people dominate Bangladesh demographics with 33 million teenagers living there right away. Another 50 million citizens are between 10 and 24 years old, making youth a huge population segment. Older adults aged 65 and above represent just 7 percent of all residents. The country sits at 2.1 children per woman for birth rates. This places Bangladesh between nations with very low and very high fertility numbers.

Early marriage creates problems for teenage girls across many regions. Limited birth control access prevents families from planning their size properly. Many couples want two children but end up having different numbers than they planned. High medical costs force people to skip healthcare when they cannot afford treatment. The government spends just 0.7 percent of its budget on health services.

UN officials want Bangladesh leaders to boost health spending to 5 percent of the national budget. Better funding would help hire more doctors and nurses nationwide. Improved medical supplies and contraceptive choices would give women better reproductive options. The population boom could benefit the economy if leaders invest properly in healthcare and education.
