Bangladesh stitches together a greener garment future

Bangladesh's garment industry set a new record for eco-friendly factories this year. The sector added thirty-eight new facilities with LEED certification for green building standards, the most in any single year. According to the group that issues these certificates, this cements the country's top spot globally for sustainable apparel manufacturing.

Notably, twenty-two of those new factories earned the highest Platinum rating, with eleven getting Gold and five receiving Silver. No factory accepted a basic certification. This pushes Bangladesh's total count of certified garment plants to two hundred seventy, including over a hundred at the Platinum level. Industry representatives say this shift reflects long-term investment and a move beyond mere compliance toward genuine environmental excellence.

The trend aligns with stricter international demands from buyers and regulators concerning carbon output, water use, and energy. Earning these certifications has become a key competitive strategy. This milestone signals the sector's preparation for upcoming rules from places like the European Union, alongside digital tracking and carbon pricing systems. The achievement demonstrates the industry's commitment to operating at a large scale while meeting future environmental expectations.

Moving forward, the focus will expand from green buildings to include overall low-carbon operations, recycling systems, and digital sustainability data. This year's record performance indicates the country is not just following global shifts but is actively leading the transition toward greener manufacturing.
