Barbecue sizzles as Tabarre flees the heat

Hundreds of people in the Port-au-Prince commune of Tabarre were forced to abandon their homes following armed assaults. The International Organization for Migration confirmed that these attacks displaced over 600 individuals, with most finding shelter with local families. This violence reflects a broader deterioration of security in the capital.

Gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, known as Barbecue, publicly warned residents to remain indoors. He stated that his Viv Ansanm coalition needed the streets to be clear for a confrontation with police forces. His message followed a significant security operation in Tabarre and Croix-des-Bouquets targeting the 400 Mawozo gang, which resulted in several gang casualties and weapon seizures.

Escalating attacks in other areas, like Thomassin, have displaced thousands more. Nationwide, the number of people displaced by violence has reached a record 1.4 million. The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs has urged all sides to protect civilians and allow aid delivery, noting that the security crisis is intensifying the humanitarian emergency.
