Barker Vormawor warns Ghana’s culture fuels impunity

Oliver Barker Vormawor of the Democracy Hub Movement has warned that a pervasive culture of impunity is eroding Ghana’s governance. Speaking at a youth training event in Ho, he argued that societal norms discouraging dissent and rewarding misconduct prevent meaningful accountability. He cited national survey data indicating most citizens believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, yet very few engage in protests or contact officials to demand change.

This reluctance to challenge authority, he noted, correlates with a strong desire among youth to emigrate. Barker Vormawor urged young people to instead join local associations and address community issues directly. He emphasized that without consequences for wrongdoing, unethical behavior becomes normalized. The training initiative, part of the Young and Safe Project led by Node Eight with partners like the LoveAid Foundation and Ho Municipal Assembly, aims to equip young leaders with advocacy skills to drive social reform.
