Barrow Halts Sale of Hamza Barracks for Armed Forces

Justice Minister Dawda Jallow told everyone President Adama Barrow stepped in to block the sale of Hamza Barracks. The property sits at Mile 2 in Banjul and started as Palm Grove Hotel before former president Yahya Jammeh changed it. The government took control of this building after officials released their official report about Jammeh's money dealings with his friends.

Lawmakers asked Minister Jallow Wednesday if someone bought the barracks for just D1.2 million. He explained that the place almost went up for auction until President Barrow heard about it and stopped everything. Jallow made clear that military property remains under government control. The armed forces continue to use the building, and there are no plans to sell it anytime soon.

Member Assan Touray from Bakau wanted to understand why President Barrow canceled the sale despite the Janneh Commission suggesting it should happen. Jallow simply answered he never learned the reason behind that decision. Another lawmaker from Wuli East pushed for more details about which properties taken from Jammeh should actually be sold off to buyers.

The minister explained that certain properties became state assets based on the commission's findings. A special team looked through all these buildings to decide which ones the government should keep or sell. Hamza Barracks first appeared on the sell list until someone gave orders to remove it. Member Fatou Cham noticed the place's rundown condition and asked why nobody fixed it up for the soldiers who lived there. Minister Jallow just admitted he had no idea about that situation either.
