Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani contacted the İsmail Beşikci Foundation on Sunday to check on the health of the prominent Turkish sociologist. Dr. Beşikci suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on Saturday, Sept. 27 while delivering remarks at the FilmAmed Documentary Film Festival in Diyarbakir. Medical staff transported him to Dicle University Faculty of Medicine where he remains in intensive care.
Foundation officials report his condition has stabilized after initial concerns. The bleeding has stopped, and he maintains consciousness despite earlier speech difficulties and right-side mobility issues. Barzani expressed willingness to provide medical assistance during his call to foundation representatives.
Dr. Beşikci gained recognition for his academic defense of Kurdish rights, which resulted in 19 years of imprisonment in Turkey. The 84-year-old scholar continues recovering under medical supervision.
