Bass guitar and 808s need opposite compressor settings

The standard bass compression recipe runs a 4 to 1 ratio, an attack between 1 and 15 ms, and 3 to 6 dB of gain reduction.

Those numbers are sound advice, and they were built for a person holding an instrument. Every value in them answers a problem created by a human hand, which is that no two notes come out at the same level.

An 808 has no hand attached to it. It is a sample, triggered at one velocity, and it arrives at exactly the same level every time, so the usual bass compression recipe is answering a question your track never asked.

Threshold barely matters on a normalized one-shot​

Most 808 libraries ship normalized, and most producers trigger them from a single fixed velocity. That means every hit crosses the threshold at the same point, by the same amount, for the same duration.

Gain reduction is therefore identical on every note. The compressor is not evening anything out, because nothing was uneven to begin with.

That collapses two controls into one. Threshold and ratio stop being separate decisions and become a single number, the amount of gain reduction you are applying to a repeated envelope, and several different combinations will land you in the same place.

So pick the reduction you want and stop adjusting them. On a plugin offering ratios up to 20 to 1, that extreme setting is not limiting anything on identical hits, it is just applying a fixed offset with a harder knee.

The exception proves the rule. If you do program real velocity changes across a bass line, the threshold starts working again, because you have effectively turned the sample back into a played instrument.

Bass guitar is the genuine case. Note level moves with finger position, string choice, and how hard someone digs in, and the threshold is doing precisely the job it was designed to do.

Compression is fighting the sample's own decay​

An 808 is close to a sine wave with an exponential fall in amplitude. It starts loud and it gets quieter on a predictable curve.

Now put a compressor across it. The loud front gets clamped, then the compressor releases while the sample continues to fall, so gain is rising at the same time the note's level is dropping.

Those two curves partly cancel each other. That cancellation is the whole reason people say compression made their 808 longer, and it is envelope shaping rather than dynamic control.

Once you see it that way, the attack and release stop being safety settings. Attack decides how much of the initial click survives, and release decides the slope of everything after it.

That is where a wide timing range earns its money, and an attack control that reaches down to 0.1 ms gives you the option of catching the click itself rather than the note behind it.

Bass guitar runs the other way again. The string keeps feeding the note, the decay is irregular, and a slower release gives the performance back its shape instead of manufacturing a sustain that was never played.

Long release times swallow the next 808​

Do the arithmetic on your pattern before you set the recovery time. At 150 BPM a quarter note lasts 400 ms, an eighth 200 ms, and a sixteenth 100 ms.

Set the release to 500 ms and run a sixteenth-note 808 fill. Gain reduction from the first hit is still active when the fifth one lands.

Every note in that run enters already attenuated, and each one arrives quieter than the last. The fill fades out on its own, which is a thing you did not ask for and will probably blame on the sample.

The meter shows it clearly. Gain reduction that never returns to zero between hits means the release is longer than the gap you gave it.

Played bass tolerates that far better, and sometimes benefits. A sustained line with a slow recovery gets a steady, ridden quality that suits the part.

So set the release against the fastest subdivision in the pattern rather than the tempo. A part built on half notes at 150 BPM leaves you 800 ms of room, while the same tempo with sixteenth-note runs leaves you under 100.

There is one more difference worth holding onto. On a played bass you can fix a bad compression setting by playing it again, and on an 808 the sample is fixed, so every problem you hear is one you built with the controls.
