Baye Colley Jailed For Iron Attack At Football Field

Kanifing court officials sent Baye Colley to Mile II Central Prison after Thursday's hearing. Magistrate Thomas Touray decided Colley must stay locked up until judges review his bail request. The next court session happens on Tuesday June 10 when lawyers will discuss letting Colley go free. Prosecution officer Sergeant 3217 E. Camara brought assault charges against the defendant. Police say Colley hurt someone badly during a fight at Bakoteh Football Field.

Court papers claim Colley attacked Omar Swaneh with a metal object on May 12. The weapon hit Swaneh's face and caused serious injuries that needed medical treatment. Colley told the judge he never used any iron tool during the incident. He wants court workers to bring Swaneh forward to explain what really happened between them. Defense lawyers believe their client deserves to hear the victim's side of the story.

Prosecutors asked for extra time to find their main witness before the trial starts. Court officials agreed to delay the case until they locate the person who saw the fight. Magistrate Touray refused to set bail amounts until the next hearing date arrives. Colley must remain behind bars at Mile II prison until Tuesday's session. The prosecution witness will testify first when the trial begins next month.
