Beitbridge border breezy, travelers cheer

People going through Beitbridge are hyped about how fast things move after Zimbabwe dropped serious cash on upgrades. The $300 million overhaul cut wait times way down, and pedestrians get through in half an hour versus the three-plus hours they used to deal with. Cars with proper paperwork clear out in under two hours instead of the full day it took before.

Travelers say splitting up buses, cars, trucks, and foot traffic made everything smoother. One guy heading to Gweru mentioned he used to dread crossing but breezed through this time. The border went digital and got more staff, which killed the old routine where you had to bounce between offices. Everything sits in one terminal, and Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, plus Immigration, opened extra service windows.

The electronic permit system lets people apply online before showing up. Immigration processed over 18,000 travelers and hundreds of buses during peak days, and officials say they're ready to handle the holiday rush while keeping enforcement tight.
