Ben Shelton loses to David Goffin, hurts ATP Finals bid

Ben Shelton fell to David Goffin 2-6, 4-6 in the Shanghai Masters second round on Friday, damaging his prospects for the ATP Finals. The American committed 22 unforced errors against Goffin's 11 and failed to convert three break point opportunities in his first match since retiring from the US Open in August with a left shoulder injury. Goffin advanced to face Gabriel Diallo on Sunday after defeating the sixth seed for the second time in their head-to-head series.

Shelton holds sixth place in the ATP Live Race to Turin with 3,720 points, but Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti could overtake him. The 22-year-old maintains a 37-19 record this season after winning the Toronto Masters 1000 title and reaching the Australian Open semifinals. He leads 10th-place Felix Auger-Aliassime by 1,005 points, while ninth-place Jack Draper withdrew from competition for the remainder of the year because of injury.
