Berekum Market Swamped by Heavy Rains

Heavy rains hit the Berekum Central market last Wednesday, leaving traders completely heartbroken. The downpour flooded large sections of the marketplace throughout the Bono Region municipality. Water rushed into numerous shops, destroying merchandise and damaging structures across the area. Several roofs tore away from buildings as the storm water rose higher through the night.

Many shop owners arrived at work on March 20, 2025, to find their livelihoods underwater. Mr. Kwame Antwi told reporters at Ghana News Agency how they discovered extensive water damage inside their businesses that morning. Countless items became ruined as water levels climbed through stores and storage areas. The financial impact deeply affected the local business community across the marketplace.

Sellers blamed clogged drainage systems for making the flooding much worse than necessary. They asked the Berekum Municipal Assembly to clean out all gutters around the market immediately. Local representative Mr. Joseph Baffour Awuah visited affected traders shortly after the disaster struck. He promised the Assembly would fix the drainage problems to prevent similar flooding during future storms.

As the rainy season began, Awuah encouraged all market women to keep trash out of drainage ditches. He asked everyone to practice better sanitation habits by properly disposing of plastic containers. The representative stressed how littering makes flooding dangers worse for everyone doing business at the central market. Proper waste management could significantly reduce flood risks during upcoming rain events.
