Bersih praises new top judges, including Wan Ahmad Farid for upholding judicial independence

Election watchdog Bersih praised Malaysia's selection of three senior judicial leaders. The organization expressed satisfaction with Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh's elevation to Chief Justice. Bersih highlighted his previous decision to withdraw from hearing Najib Razak's case while serving as High Court judge in 2022. The steering committee emphasized that such ethical behavior strengthens public confidence in judicial independence. They stressed the importance of maintaining this principled approach throughout his tenure.

The government simultaneously named Abu Bakar Jais as Court of Appeals President and Azizah Nawawi as Chief Judge for Sabah and Sarawak. Constitutional Article 122B governed these appointments after the King approved recommendations from the Prime Minister. The Conference of Rulers provided consultation during the selection process. Malaysia's monarch will administer oaths to all three judges at the national palace on July 28. Bersih views these appointments as essential for preserving legal sovereignty and judicial credibility.
