Many important people want the government to free Dr. Kizza Besigye from prison. Mr. Charles Peter Mayiga, a leader in Buganda, asked them to let him out. He thinks everyone needs to follow the law because it keeps people safe and helps the country grow better.
The army put Dr. Besigye and his friend Hajj Lutale in a big prison called Luzira. They said these men had guns they weren't supposed to have. The highest court in Uganda said army courts shouldn't try regular people like Dr. Besigye. Even after this decision, the government kept both men in jail.
The prison rules say they can't keep anyone without the right papers. These papers ran out many days ago. Instead of freeing them, the government took them to a different court and said they did something very bad to their country.
The lawyers helping Dr. Besigye say the government broke the law by keeping him in prison. Mr. Mayiga agrees and remembers how the President said following the law matters a lot. He thinks they should free Dr. Besigye first, then bring any new charges later if necessary.
Dr. Besigye stopped eating food because he was angry about staying in jail. He didn't eat for more than a week and became very weak. They had to push him in a wheelchair when they took him to court on Friday. He started eating again after they moved him to the new court.
Mr. Mayiga is very sad about how they're treating Dr. Besigye. He thinks it makes Uganda look bad to keep such a weak person in jail this way. He wants everyone to follow what the highest court says and treat people fairly.
