Bishop Zziwa tells inmates - drop the grudge, find peace

A bishop told prisoners in Mityana that holding a grudge only makes their time harder. Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa, chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, visited Mityana Prison for a special Christmas Mass, urging inmates to forgive anyone who wronged them or helped put them behind bars. He pointed to Nelson Mandela's example of leaving prison without bitterness as a model for personal transformation.

Bishop Zziwa said anger and resentment just extend suffering, while forgiveness creates a path to healing and peace. He praised prison officials and chaplains for their work providing spiritual and psychosocial support to help restore dignity. Prison authorities agreed that such guidance is vital for changing behavior and preparing inmates for life after release. The bishop promised the Church would keep up pastoral visits and counseling programs to aid rehabilitation. His message tied into a broader season focused on repentance and spiritual renewal.
