Black Ion 76 turns all-buttons mode into a continuum

Black Ion 76 lets you blend continuously from a selected 4-to-1, 8-to-1, 12-to-1, or 20-to-1 ratio into its All-Buttons-In response. That is a bigger change than adding another ratio button. On the original 1176 idea, the famous four-button state behaves differently because several parts of the feedback circuit shift together.

The usual description says all-buttons mode gives you a ratio somewhere between roughly 12-to-1 and 20-to-1. That is true, but incomplete. Universal Audio documents changes in circuit bias, attack, release, compression curve, and distortion when all four ratio buttons are engaged.

Black Ion 76 keeps that behavior as a destination instead of making it an on-or-off detour. Its Nuke control lets you move toward the all-buttons response gradually, so the aggressive state becomes something you can dose before deciding how much compressed signal belongs in the mix.

All-buttons mode changes more than the ratio​

A normal 1176 ratio selection changes more than a number printed beside a button because the threshold and knee also vary with ratio. The classic 4-to-1 setting is therefore not simply a softer mathematical version of 20-to-1. The circuit reaches gain reduction differently as you change the operating condition.

All-buttons mode pushes that interaction further. Universal Audio says the effective ratio moves between about 12-to-1 and 20-to-1 while bias points and timing behavior change through the circuit. Initial transients can also experience a different attack characteristic, helping explain why the mode can sound explosive rather than merely louder or more compressed.

That matters when judging an 1176-style plugin by gain reduction alone. Two settings showing similar meter movement can shape the front of a snare, the body of a room mic, and the recovery between hits differently. More gain reduction is not a complete description of what you changed.

Black Ion 76 is built as a feedback compressor, so its detector responds after the gain-reduction element rather than simply reading the untouched input. CarbonDSP says its ratio emerges from loop gain, and the nonlinear FET element changes distortion as the compressor is driven harder. That keeps compression amount and circuit color tied to how the signal actually works the model.

Nuke turns the hardware trick into a controllable range​

The CarbonDSP FET compressor release keeps the four standard ratios but adds a continuous path between a chosen ratio and the all-buttons response. You are not restricted to clean 4-to-1 on one side and full four-button violence on the other. Intermediate positions can borrow some of that altered response without committing to the entire effect.

That makes Nuke different from a wet and dry control. Moving Nuke changes the behavior of the compressed path itself, while Comp Mix changes how much of that processed path you hear against the original signal. Treating them as separate decisions gives you graduated FET crush with independent parallel blend rather than one generic intensity knob.

On drums, that distinction can preserve more of the dry transient while the compressed portion stays deliberately rude. CarbonDSP's rebuilt preset library uses the same logic in its parallel drum and vocal patches, which are driven hard, level-matched, then blended back so the uncompressed attack remains present.

Input level still matters because Black Ion 76 uses the familiar input-driven approach rather than a conventional threshold knob. Push more level into the compressor and you increase gain reduction while also driving its nonlinear FET behavior harder. Nuke then determines how far that driven response moves toward the all-buttons character.

Detector filtering changes what gets crushed​

Low frequencies can dominate compressor detection even when the audible problem sits elsewhere in the spectrum. Black Ion 76 includes a sidechain high-pass filter specifically so bass energy does not have to drive the whole gain-reduction action. That control becomes especially useful once Nuke is making the compression more aggressive.

A kick-heavy drum bus can therefore hit the detector differently without removing bass from the audible output. The plugin also has separate post-compression high-pass and low-pass filters, and those do another job entirely. They shape what leaves the processor rather than deciding what tells the compressor to react.

Black Ion 76 also separates its transformer-style Iron control from the FET compression path. CarbonDSP's current preset library even includes an Iron Only setup that disables compression while leaving the class-A stage and output transformer active. That gives you a clean way to distinguish extra harmonic color from the compression distortion created by driving the FET and moving toward Nuke.

The same separation matters when oversampling is raised. CarbonDSP provides settings from 1x through 16x, with higher modes intended to reduce aliasing from nonlinear processing at the cost of additional CPU and reported latency. Hard Nuke settings give those nonlinear stages more reason to benefit from the extra processing than a restrained pass doing little gain reduction.
