BNP says Jamaat wants PR polls to finish what Pakistan started

Bangladesh Nationalist Party officials claim that opposition forces from the 1971 Liberation War seek to disrupt upcoming national elections. These groups advocate for a Proportional Representation voting system through organized street demonstrations. BNP Standing Committee member Selima Rahman specifically targets Jamaat-e-Islami and other radical Islamist organizations during a democracy discussion in Dhaka. She argues that ordinary citizens neither comprehend nor support the proposed electoral changes.

Rahman contends that the PR system would eliminate individual candidates and restrict voter choice to party selections only. The BNP leader condemns Jamaat members for their historical collaboration with Pakistani forces during the independence struggle. She accuses them of maintaining their previous ideological positions despite current public statements. Rahman warns that these groups attempt to undermine Bangladesh's democratic progress through election delays and national instability.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir previously criticized joint programs by radical parties demanding electoral reforms. The organization promises to ensure elections proceed as scheduled despite opposition efforts to create political uncertainty.
