Bombay High Court acquits 12 in 2006 Mumbai blasts, cites lack of evidence

Mumbai's Bombay High Court overturned convictions for twelve defendants accused of the 2006 train bombings. Justices Anil Kilor and S. Chandak criticized investigators for inadequate evidence gathering. The court determined that prosecutors could not prove what types of bombs caused the attacks. Circuit boards seized from two defendants provided no useful evidence about the devices used. Prosecution teams failed to demonstrate the nature of the weapons employed during the terror incident.

The attack occurred on July 11, 2006, when seven devices detonated in crowded commuter trains. The assault killed 189 people and wounded 800 others within eleven minutes. A trial court had previously sentenced five defendants to execution and seven to life imprisonment. These individuals spent nineteen years in prison before their acquittals. The defendants successfully proved investigators tortured them to obtain confessions.
