Brazil's Lula nukes loot boxes for kids

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva enacted legislation prohibiting loot boxes for minors throughout Brazil. The measure becomes effective in March 2026 and requires games containing such features to receive adult ratings. Publishers must eliminate loot box mechanisms from titles aimed at younger audiences or accept mature classifications.

Brazil joins other nations implementing similar restrictions on gaming monetization practices. The Netherlands proposed comprehensive loot box prohibitions in 2023, while Belgium banned them entirely in 2018. These actions forced FIFA point sales to cease in Belgian markets and sparked ongoing legal debates about gambling classifications.

Gaming companies may challenge the Brazilian statute through lobbying efforts before implementation. The legislation could establish precedent for additional global regulations targeting controversial monetization systems. Industry observers anticipate significant corporate responses as the March deadline approaches.
