Bukomansimbi South ditches party picks for indie hopeful

Party loyalists ditch flags, hype an independent in Bukomansimbi South. Members from NUP and NRM peeled off from their parliamentary picks in Uganda, throwing weight behind Hassan Mukiibi Sserunjoji, while saying their presidential choices stay put, and the switch cranked tensions across the constituency.

NUP activists, with alleged district spokesperson Sipresio Kafeero out front, dumped incumbent Geoffrey Kayemba Ssolo after saying community needs had gone unanswered since his election. They rallied behind Sserunjoji during a campaign stop at Butanga Village, Kyankoole Parish, in Butenga Sub-county.

NRM defectors, with Kibinge Sub-county chair Sowed Sserwadda steering, peeled off from flagbearer Bashir Ssemakula. They pitched Sserunjoji as the contender who could pull rival camps into one tent.

Both blocs said support depends on delivery, and they warned that broken pledges would tank future backing fast.

Attempts to reach Bukomansimbi District NRM chair Shafik Mwanje went nowhere. NUP regional spokesperson Muhammad Muusa Matovu Kigongo called the defections unfortunate, saying they sprang from unmet personal expectations, not ideology, and he insisted the party still felt confident about holding Bukomansimbi South.

Supporters pressed for rural electrification, better roads, and answers to social headaches. Women demanded stronger laws to hold men responsible for neglecting children.

Sserunjoji promised action on those points if elected, and he urged Bukomansimbi South voters to show up in big numbers when ballots open.
