Bulawayo Town Clerk Christopher Dube requests to remain in his position until age 70 under revised government retirement policies. Dube submitted a confidential letter on September 30, asking the mayor and councillors to reconsider their 2024 decision to extend his contract only until November 2026. The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works raised the retirement age for local authority chief executives from 65 to 70 through Statutory Instrument 198 of 2024.
Dube bypassed the General Purposes Committee after it failed twice to achieve quorum on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30. He assumed the town clerk role in October 2016 following the death of Middleton Nyoni. The council previously extended his initial four-year contract before its September 2020 expiration and approved another two-year extension in February 2024. Dube previously held the same position at Victoria Falls Municipality before joining Bulawayo.
