Burn, Joelinton headers lift Newcastle past Athletic Club

Newcastle United climbed past Real Madrid into sixth position in the Champions League standings after defeating Athletic Club through two headed goals from Dan Burn and Joelinton at St James' Park. The triumph marked the third consecutive European victory for Eddie Howe's squad, their longest such streak since 2007.

Burn broke the deadlock during the 11th minute when he powered Kieran Trippier's free-kick delivery off the post and into the net. Athletic Club responded with threatening chances as Adama Boiro hit the frame and Nick Pope made a sharp stop against Unai Gomez. Newcastle lost Anthony Gordon during the match because of a hip problem but extended their advantage after halftime when Harvey Barnes worked space before lifting a cross toward Joelinton, who headed past goalkeeper Unai Simón.

The Spanish visitors pressed for a comeback and forced Pope into another save against substitute Nico Serrano near the final whistle. Howe maintained most of his starting lineup from the previous loss to West Ham, and his veteran defenders justified that decision with their scoring contributions that secured all three points.
