Burundi Quits AUSSOM Over Troop Dispute, Citing 'Betrayal'

Burundi Leaves Somalia Mission.

Burundi will no longer send troops to help keep peace in Somalia. It had planned to send soldiers as part of a new African Union mission called AUSSOM. But Burundi and Somalia could not agree on how many troops to send.

Burundi wanted to send 2,000 more soldiers, but Somalia said it could only take 1,041. This upset Burundi, which felt Somalia was not grateful for all Burundi had done to help in the past.

Burundi was one of the first countries to send soldiers to Somalia back in 2007. Its troops fought bravely against militants in Somalia's capital city. Many Burundian soldiers died.

Somalia thanked Burundi for its sacrifices over the years. However, the disagreement over troop numbers was too great, and Burundi decided to withdraw from the new AUSSOM mission.

This could make it harder to keep peace in Somalia, where Burundi's troops have played a big role. Somalia now needs to figure out how to fill the gaps as Burundi's soldiers leave.

Other countries like Uganda, Ethiopia and Egypt still plan to send troops. They will help Somalia as it keeps working to beat the militants and bring stability to the country.
