Bus wreck on Rukungiri road hits 3 dead, 19 hurt

Three people died instantly Saturday evening when a bus crashed head-on with a minibus on the Rukungiri-Ntungamo road. The collision left 19 others with serious injuries. Police spokesman Elly Maate said the accident happened at 10:22 p.m. in Omukabingo cell, Buyanja Sub County.

A blue Perfect company Isuzu bus hit a white Toyota Hiace taxi. Those killed include Ronald Kakimpa, a 35-year-old taxi conductor, three-year-old Congolese national Liberty Bonance, and an unidentified female passenger. Among the injured were several military personnel, including UPDF officers Captain Musinguzi Bright and Sergeant Kwesigwa Edgar.

Police report the bus driver veered into the wrong lane before hitting the taxi. The impact caused the bus to fall onto its side across the road as the taxi spun around facing backward. Authorities took the victims to Nyakibale Hospital for treatment. The bus driver fled the scene after the crash.

Officials transported the bodies to Rwakabengo Health Centre Mortuary for examination. Both vehicles remain at the police station awaiting inspection. Maate confirmed that early investigations point to reckless driving from the bus operator as police continue looking into the matter.
