Bush Vets Rage Over Museveni Epic Betrayal

Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago claims President Museveni turned against his former allies who fought with him. He named Dr Kizza Besigye as the person most hurt among these former friends. Lukwago pointed to books written about Museveni, where people like Eria Kategaya, Sam Njuba, and Miria Matembe all tell stories of broken trust. He said the common theme across all these accounts shows a pattern of Museveni breaking promises to those closest to him.

Besigye served as Museveni's doctor during the war from 1981 to 1986. He left his job at Aga Khan Hospital to join the rebels who later took power. Besigye later became Museveni's strongest critic and spent much time in prison for his opposition. Lukwago says Besigye knows Museveni better than anyone because of their close relationship during the war. Many former war comrades like Sejusa and Kayihura also expressed regret about trusting Museveni.

Besigye is in jail today facing treason charges for actions allegedly committed in Geneva, Athens, and Nairobi. Courts denied his bail requests despite his meeting all requirements. His lawyers argue these charges stem from political motives rather than actual crimes. Both Besigye and his ally Hajj Obeid Lutale deny all accusations against them.
