Cameron John Wagenius pleads guilty in AT&T, Verizon data heist

Federal authorities secured a guilty plea from Cameron John Wagenius, a 21-year-old former Army soldier who targeted major telecommunications companies. The defendant admitted to wire fraud, extortion, and identity theft charges stemming from attacks against AT&T and Verizon systems. Wagenius operated under online aliases while conducting breaches between April 2023 and December 2024. His criminal activities continued during his military service before authorities arrested him near a Texas base last December. Law enforcement tracked him after he publicly boasted about accessing President Trump's call records.

The cyberattacker exploited Snowflake's cloud infrastructure to steal phone and text message data from millions of customers. AT&T confirmed that hackers compromised records belonging to nearly all subscribers during the breach period. Wagenius faces a maximum sentence of 27 years in federal prison when the judge delivers his punishment on October 6th. Cybersecurity experts praised the swift investigation and prosecution as a significant victory against digital crime. The case highlights ongoing vulnerabilities within telecommunications networks that criminals continue to exploit for personal gain.
