Woman pleads guilty in Matabeleland acid attack on friend

A woman attacked her friend with acid after accusing her of sleeping with her husband. Sithulisile Nyoni admitted guilt when she appeared before a Bulawayo court Tuesday. The 29-year-old from Fort Rixon faces charges of assault with intent to cause serious harm. Magistrate Eva Matura heard the case against Nyoni. She will learn her punishment on June 25.

Berlinda Mkandla worked as a shop helper at Pioneer Village 1 Business Centre when the attack happened. Nyoni found her there around 8PM on May 28 and started arguing about her marriage. The angry woman threw acid at Mkandla's face and leg during their fight. Mkandla suffered bad burns and needed emergency hospital care. Police came to investigate the violent incident.

The prosecutor Mufaro Ndirayire explained how the two women knew each other before this happened. Nyoni believed Mkandla was having a secret relationship with her husband. The acid caused serious damage to the victim's skin. Doctors treated Mkandla for her painful injuries. Her medical treatment will cost one thousand dollars.

Nyoni told the court she felt sorry for what she did. She promised to pay all of Mkandla's hospital bills. The defendant said she was ready to take responsibility for her actions. Her lawyer will argue for a lighter sentence at the next hearing. The case shows how jealousy can lead to dangerous violence.
