Cape Coast flooding collapses homes after 12-hour rain kills two

Heavy rains pounded Cape Coast for twelve straight hours last Saturday. The storms started late Friday night and kept going until morning. Two old buildings fell down because water damaged their foundations. Two elderly people died when the structures collapsed around 4 in the morning. The main drainage pipes could not handle all the water rushing through the city.

Water flowed everywhere from Tantri to London Bridge and continued to Ntsin before reaching the ocean. The flooding hit homes near London Bridge really hard. Old mud houses could not stand up to all that water pressure. One building crashed down at London Bridge and another one fell at Coronation. Emergency workers had to knock down what was left to keep people safe.

George Justice Arthur leads the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly and talked to reporters about what happened. He wants government groups and private companies to help fix up the old buildings around town. These historic structures bring tourists to Cape Coast and need protection. Fire service teams and city workers rushed to help people right away. They had to close roads which made traffic terrible across the whole area.

People went through the broken pieces looking for things they could save. City leaders tore down another weak building in Brofoyedur to prevent more accidents. Shop owners in the Kingsway area had to dry out clothes and shoes after water ruined their stores. Families who lost their homes received emergency help from local officials. Everyone worries about more rain coming during this wet season.
